Privacy policy

The short version
BeanThere keeps your coffee log on your phone. There is no account, no server of ours, and nothing is uploaded. We do not collect, store, see, or sell anything about you.
One thing leaves your device, and only while you are logging a cup: your location, sent to Google so the app can tell you which coffeeshop you are sitting in.
What stays on your device
Everything you put into the app:
- your entries — the shop, the drink, your notes and your three scores
- your photographs of the cup, the room, the bag and the sign
- what the app read off a bag: roaster, blend, origin, process, roast level and the rest
- the drafts it writes for Instagram and Google Maps
- your settings
These are stored in BeanThere's own container on your device and are included in your device backups if you back your device up. We have no access to any of it. There is no "sign in", because there is nothing to sign in to.
What leaves your device
Your location, to find a coffeeshop. When you log a cup, the app sends your coordinates to the Google Places API to ask which cafés are nearby. If you type a shop name to search for one, that text is sent too. Google's handling of those requests is covered by the Google Privacy Policy. The app asks for location only while you are using it, never in the background, and you can refuse: shop names can be typed by hand instead, and everything else in the app still works.
A request to a coffeeshop's own website. When a shop has a website, the app fetches that page once to look for the shop's Instagram handle, so a caption can credit them. It reads the page and nothing else; it sends no information about you.
A request to Instagram, to check that handle is really theirs. Before the app will put an @mention in a caption it fetches that one public profile page and compares the name on it to the name of the shop. A handle that does not check out is discarded rather than tagged. This is a plain, logged-out request for a public page: no account, no login, no cookie, and nothing about you or your entry is sent with it.
Nothing else. There is no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising and no third-party SDK of any kind in this app.
Apple Intelligence
Reading a coffee bag and drafting your captions use Apple's on-device Foundation Models. The bag's text and your notes are processed on your phone and are not sent to Apple, to us, or to anyone else. On devices without Apple Intelligence the app uses a plain keyword parser instead, which is also entirely on-device.
Photographs
BeanThere asks for add-only access to your photo library. That permission lets the app save the photos from an entry to your camera roll so you can pick them in Instagram. It does not grant permission to read the photos already on your phone, and the app never asks for it.
Photos taken inside the app are stored in the app's own container, not in your camera roll, unless you publish an entry.
Publishing
The app cannot post to Instagram or Google Maps for you, and does not try. When you publish, it stages your photos, puts the text on your clipboard, and opens the other app so you can post it yourself. What happens after that is between you and that company, under their privacy policy, not ours.
Children
BeanThere is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone.
Deleting your data
Delete the app. Everything it holds goes with it. There is no copy anywhere else, and nothing for us to delete on your behalf, because we never had it.
If you have backed your device up, a copy may remain in that backup until it is overwritten or deleted — that is Apple's backup, under your control.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
