SongCatcher for iOS · Effective 23 July 2026

SongCatcher is built to identify the music around you without building a profile of you. There are no accounts, no advertising, and no analytics or tracking. This page explains exactly what the app does with data.

The short version

Microphone

When you start a listening session, SongCatcher captures short segments of audio to recognize the song. Matching is first attempted on your device using Apple's ShazamKit. If that does not find a match, a brief audio sample is sent to our recognition provider (ACRCloud) to identify the track. Audio is used only to produce a match; it is not tied to your identity and is not kept by SongCatcher.

Location (optional)

If you grant location access, each catch can be tagged with the place where you heard it. The coordinates are turned into a place name and stored on your device only — your precise location is never sent to our servers. You can decline location access and use every other feature normally.

Your catches

The songs you catch, along with their time and any tagged place, are saved locally on your device. Deleting the app removes this history.

Song meaning & artist info (optional)

If you use the optional feature that describes what a song is about, the song's title and artist (not your audio or location) are sent through our server to Anthropic's Claude API to generate a short description, and may be enriched with public web results. This runs only when you request it.

Lyrics

To show lyrics, SongCatcher looks up the song by title and artist through third-party lyrics providers (Musixmatch, LRCLIB, and lyrics.ovh).

Abuse prevention

Requests to SongCatcher's server are authenticated using Apple's App Attest, which gives each install a per-device cryptographic key. We use it to confirm requests come from a genuine copy of the app and to enforce fair-use limits. It is not linked to your identity and is not used to track you.

Services we rely on

SongCatcher sends the limited data described above to these providers so the app can work:

Each provider handles data under its own privacy policy.

Children

SongCatcher is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update this page and the effective date above.
